At the end of yesterday’s screed posting, I promised to be funny today. It wasn’t a lie. I just didn’t know what would turn up on today’s menu to be commented upon. But Joe Heller’s take on climate change and science deniers is kind of funny, except, y’know, for the part where the fool votes. But […]
Comes word via a Facebook posting by Hilary Price that the New York Post is dropping its comic page as a cost-cutting move. I haven’t got a second source on this and don’t know her initial source, but I know and trust her personally, so while we can all hope someone got it wrong, I’m […]
Clay Bennett fights against the current of cartoons about the Supreme Court’s ruling that prayer before public meetings is okay. Most other commentary involves officials praying because they can’t solve various problems, which is a retreat into Will Rogers-style gov-bashing, a familiar take that will get you picked up by editors but that doesn’t advance the […]
If you aren’t already reading “The Heart of Juliet Jones” over at Comics Kingdom, this would be a good time to jump aboard. The main reason to read the strip, of course, is not to actually “read” it, but to enjoy Stan Drake’s artwork. However, the stories are not bad and much of the appeal of […]
A really disconnected grouping today, so let’s start easy with Edge City, in which the grandparents have been exploring the concept of retirement communities. I can be objective about this because, though I am approaching retirement age, I won’t ever be able to afford to retire and writers don’t “retire” anyway. I came to grips some […]
If you read the comments here, you’ve seen the name of Brian Fies more than once. He’s even been a featured artist a time or two. He’s one of my best-friends-I’ve-never-met, and I kind of knew I’d known him for a long time, but the 10th anniversary of his landmark graphic memoir, “Mom’s Cancer,” made me realize […]
If the guy in Oklahoma had actually been named “Fred Botched,” I don’t think we’d be seeing the phrase “Botched execution” any more often than we have. But the debacle may indeed have finally brought the practice of killing people on purpose to the forefront, and it’s been interesting to see the near-unanimity of commentary across […]
There’s a traditional practice in comicstripology of analyzing news to project lead time, and a more modern practice of analyzing it to project print circulation of a strip.Which is to say, if a strip can comment on current news, it’s probably web-only or nearly so.Print clients like having strips in hand well in advance, and […]
May Day celebrations seem a bit muted this year, as Italian cartoonist Enrico Bertuccioli (“Ebert”) notes in this Cartoon Movement panel. It’s nice to know the economy is screwed everywhere and not just in the country that just noted a special centennial celebration. Gosh, it seems like yesterday. Granted, the worldwide collapse is not as dramatic in […]
The brouhaha over San Diego Clippers owner Donald Sterling took a bad turn for cartoonists yesterday when NBA Commissioner Adam Sterling hit him with a $2.5 million fine (the maximum allowed) and a lifetime ban from the league, meaning that, while they couldn’t actually force him to sell the team, they could forbid him to […]
Mike Thompson on the FCC’s announced intention of giving Comcast and its brethren the right to accept bribes to stifle any competition to Netflix, Amazon Premium, Skype and other large, well-established streamers. For those who have not heard, or whose eyes roll up when the geeks start talking about “net neutrality,” the basic story is in […]
In one of the four or five political cartoons today that is not about how much more room there is in a wheel well than in a regular airline seat, Jack Ohman wraps up the saga of Cliven Bundy.Let us never speak of this again. Please listen carefully, as our annoyance options have changedTina’s Groove on […]
Perspective in art is important and there’s no better way to start today’s posting than with a bit of perspective from Matt Wuerker. There’s an awful lot of looney out there, but the underlying problem is probably not so much the guns in Georgia or historically-challenged redneck anarchists who don’t realize that nearly all the land […]
Each year when the Overseas Press Club gives out the Thomas Nast Award, I try to stifle both my general indifference to plaques and my specifically Irish-American feelings about Thomas Nast, because not only is this one of the more thoughtfully bestowed awards, but it is not often given to anyone as bigoted as the […]
Let’s start today with Sheldon, because I’m gonna be a cranky old man for most of the post, so why not begin with an overtly cranky-old-man gag?I resisted GPS for awhile not because I’m a cranky old man but because I didn’t feel any need for it. When I first moved to New Hampshire, my […]
