(Pia Guerra – The Nib)(Benjamin Slyngstad)I’m starting with a Juxtaposition because I don’t want to single out a particular cartoonist and there have been more than one who have, apparently, jumped to conclusions regarding the Nashville bomber.Or, at the best, commented on those conclusions, which are being leapt to full-force on social media.First of all, […]
What makes Agnes (Creators) work so well is that Agnes and Trout really are like Lucy and Ethel: They come up with some outlandishly bad ideas, but their hearts are always in the right place.Their poverty helps: While Lucy wanted the spotlight down at Ricky’s club, Agnes is trying to climb out of the hole […]
Speed Bump (Creators) speaks for me.A year can’t be evil, and I refuse to sit around feeling sorry for myself, but I’m certainly willing to call the past year nuts and illogical and silly and, as the little lad about to take over suggests, simply puzzling.I don’t much care if they catch him just so […]
There is a lot of kvetching over how horrible 2020 has been, but cartoonists are going to have to really kick out the jams to do better than Ann Telnaes (WashPost), who not only echoes Mike Dukakis’s Greek saying that a fish stinks from the head, but, working on-line, does not let herself be limited […]
Looks like Dennis and I were on the same page, featuring Comics of Christmas Past, but, as usual, I’ll be more long-winded.Let’s turn the calendar back to 1925, which isn’t a round number but was astonishingly better than 1920. I don’t know what happened in those intervening five years, but newspapers suddenly exploded with comic […]
I suppose Michael de Adder (Ind) sums it up best: We’ve gone off the rails and Dear Leader continues to sit there tweeting away. The question now being not so much “So what?” as “Now what?” Yesterday, I joked about an Oprah-style rally where everyone who attended got a pardon, and Clay Bennett (CTFP) jokes about a […]
Last night, a whole bunch of cartoons suddenly became, if not obsolete, at least blunted. For instance, Joe Heller (Ind) was absolutely right that, given the financial pressure on people impacted by the pandemic, a relief payment of $600 was ludicrous, if not insulting, but possibly both.He wasn’t the only cartoonist to say that, nor was […]
The question of whether or not to take the vaccine is loaded. Both Biden and Harris (as well as Pence) have taken the shots in order to promote the idea that the vaccine is safe and effective, but, as noted here before, the Queen was going to take it for the same reason only decided […]
Adam Zyglis (Cagle) offered this cartoon several days ago, when Mitch McConnell finally broke his silence and admitted that Joe Biden had won the election. And, yes, it was as controversial as admitting that the sky is blue. But the cartoon had a short shelf life because the news did not, in fact, quash Trump’s attempts […]
It used to be a tradition this time of year to break the fourth wall and wish readers a Merry Christmas, these being some examples by classic strips back in 1925. I didn’t see many examples today, though it may be that, come next Friday, more cartoonists will do that. It’s a clumsy situation to have […]
I don’t check political cartoons on Friday, so I don’t know if this exploded over the past 24 or 48 hours, but suddenly a bunch of conservative cartoonists like Gary Varvel (Creators) are worried that Joe Biden will hand us all over to Communist China.“Communist China” being a term suddenly come into vogue after several […]
Harry Bliss, who lives about 20 miles south of here, cites 40 inches of snow from yesterday’s morning dump, and I got a laff over his having bought JD Salinger’s home and then joking about having to dig himself out.Salinger wasn’t a hermit — he came into town and was sociable enough — but he […]
Clay Jones (Ind) strikes the right note on the ridiculous question of whether people deserve the titles they’ve earned.Spoiler: Yes.Plenty of people have noted that the term “dottore” was applied to educators before it was applied to physicians. For that matter, it was applied to educators before there was such a thing as a Phd […]
I realize it’s a case of “damning with faint praise,” but Mike Luckovich (AJC) offers the best of a bunch of happy cartoons praising the rollout of the Covid vaccine, which is a demonstration of Tolstoy’s opening of Anna Karenina that “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”That’s […]
I like Walt Handelsman (Times-Picayune)‘s cartoon, and I enjoyed the celebratory posts on social media yesterday as the electoral votes came in from the various states, sealing the Biden victory and spelling an end to . . .Well, an end to what?Along with confirmation of the election results came news that Bill Barr has decided […]
