AAEC Letter to Baltimore Sun Re: Use Of Artificial Intelligence

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) has penned an open letter to The Baltimore Sun regarding their use of artificial intelligence in the creation of editorial cartoons and other editorial content.

Signed by AAEC President Marc Murphy the letter in part states:

Whatever the intent, the only message The Sun actually delivered was that it has finally and completely surrendered any remaining claim it may have had to journalistic legitimacy and its former place among the nation’s important newspapers.

The AAEC condemns the use of AI for its theft from artists, its misuse of our planet’s resources, and its threat to original, creative thought. The Road to Hell — an America that has outsourced its most important human work — is paved with cost-cutting moves.

  1. They’ve destroyed the saying, a picture’s worth a thousand words. This picture’s worth five words, “the Sun can’t do creativity.”

I guess it was quicker to generate this than taking a picture of people and add word bubbles.

  2. This schlock is the Sun’s attempt at replacing the brilliant KAL? This is an insult to the journalistic integrity of the Baltimore Sun and its legacy of outstanding staff cartoonists like KAL and his predecessor, Tom Flannery. Plus, its an insult to its readers, subjecting them to this substandard tripe, trying to pass it off as political art. Hell, it’s not worthy of wrapping garbage.

    1. Integrity, journalistic or otherwise is not the aim of the MBA mindset. Newspapers, hospitals, mobile home parks – it doesn’t matter, the modus operandi is always the same: cut costs until there are no more costs to cut and the business entity is a dried up husk to be sold for scrap.

    2. The Sun no longer has any journalistic integrity to lose since David Smith, Sinclair TV minion, bought the paper. Think Jeff Bezos X Newt Gingrich. That Fells Point cartoon made me throw up in my mouth a little when I saw it.
      Go get ‘im, AAEC!

  3. Would pay it no attention and let the ugliness die on it’s own. HIDEOUS!

  4. It’s clear from these, that AI can’t replace a creative human.

  5. I say again, I only like work produced by human hands so that I may be awed at the effort. Anything else is just watching my washing machine tumble clothes around. And less meaningful than that.

  6. What idiot looked at that abomination and thought it looked good? For heaven’s sake, it’s got more useless labels than a Garrison toon.
