From Kevin’s UnNecessary Things Substack:

In my last post I mentioned that the pinched nerve in my neck has recently flared up. The pain and subsequent sleepless nights have knocked me for a loop and cut down on my productivity. My usual MO is to just push through the pain and insomnia. But after a cartoon client suggested I take a little time to heal before jumping into a new project — hi, Erin! — I’ve decided to listen to my body and rest this week. I’m stretching throughout the day, I’ve bought a cervical neck pillow, and I’ve got a therapeutic massage scheduled.

In the meantime, I’m taking stock of where I am and what’s next with my career. I’m at a transition point…

I’m good at drawing editorial cartoons and I have this Substack. That’s my baseline. I’m going to keep drawing and posting cartoons here. And I want to write and draw picture books. That’s my aspirational goal.

The trick is how to make that work. There aren’t many of us editorial cartoonists around, but those who are are, for the most part, exceptional. (And you should support them on Substack if you can [link added] .) I’m trying to figure out what makes me unique in that small field. What can I do to make my work stand out?
