Cartoonists Settle with Cadence Comic Art
Skip to commentsJudge Jennifer L Rochon has dismissed the case against Cadence Comic Art and its owner Paolo Belfiore that was brought by 17 cartoonists who alleged the gallery and art dealer of defrauded them and refusing to return their artwork. The dismissal came in response to a request by the artists’ attorney informing the court that the parties had agreed to “have reached a full and final settlement in principle resolving all claims in this matter.” The judge’s order allow for the case to be reopened within 30 days should the settlement is not completed.
The plaintiffs include artists: Rafael Albuquerque, Mahmud Anjum Asrar, Alessandro Cappuccio, Elena Casagrande, Danai Christina Kilaidoni, Yildiray Cinar, Becky Cloonan, Wesley Craig, Tyler Crook, Jenny Frison, Pia Guerra, Joelle Jones, Leila Leiz, David Marquez, Valerio Schiti, Jill Thompson, and Paolo Villanelli. According to the original complaint, the artists began working with Cadence around 2008. In 2024 several comic book artists cut ties with Cadence Comic Art. Formal requests demanding the return of unsold artwork, inventory records and payment of all unpaid sales proceeds went unheeded resulting in the artists to file this lawsuit.
Details of the settlement are not publicly disclosed.
