China Using Cartoons to Frame Public Opinion in West

An interesting article by Resham at StratNews Global (New Delhi, India) about China effectively using cartoons on social media platforms to shape narratives of international events to Americans, western nations, India, and Japan.

China seems to have deliberately outsourced its foreign policy messaging to cartoonists.

Political cartoons and poster art have quietly been elevated into tools of external propaganda, signalling a conscious shift in how Beijing seeks to shape global opinion. State-run and state-linked outlets such as Xinhua and Global Times now push fresh visuals onto international social media platforms with exuberant enthusiasm, suggesting an institutionalised campaign rather than spontaneous creativity.

As Resham later states, China primarily uses X and other western social media platforms rather than domestic social media platforms as the intent is to shape international discussion.

I visited two X sites cited as outlets. I did not find “cartoons” drawn by artists rather than AI generated editorial cartoons. Below are three examples I found on China Xinhua News’ X account.

Excellent article and worth a read.

  1. That Arty Intell fella seems to be their go-to cartoonist. He’s humble fellow tho. Won’t ever sign his work or include even his initials A.I.

  2. Okay, one more cartoon of Uncle Sam shooting up with oil. I’ll add it to the pile. (The fact that it’s AI from a very unimaginative source tells us something.)
