Ann Telnaes: “What a Year”

In what has to be the cartooning story of the year Ann Telnaes left The Washington Post after they refused to run her cartoon of billionaire oligarchs paying tribute to Donald Trump.

Says Ann:

When I made my decision to leave, I knew this would be the end of my thirty year career as an editorial cartoonist

– but that’s not what happened.

Instead Ann’s situation became a worldwide cause célèbre.

Later in 2025 The Washington Post would, without irony, express jubilation that Ann won the Pulitzer Prize for Illustrated Reporting and Commentary for her work that appeared in The Post.

[Aside: Ann would be the first true editorial cartoonist to win the renamed category.]

All of it resulting in Ann touring the world in defense of editorial cartooning.

Throughout this year I received many invitations to speak about the free press and editorial cartooning, here in the US and internationally. As I’ve mentioned before, public speaking isn’t in my comfort zone but I tried to accept as many as I could because of Trump’s escalating attacks on the free press and also to talk about my profession and hopefully make people more aware of the importance of editorial cartooning.

Ann Telnaes describes what turned out to be her year of success.
