The Daily Cartoonist Celebrates 20th Year

Twenty years ago, I sat down and hammered out a quick blog post that became the start of what is now The Daily Cartoonist. The blog began as an excuse to keep tabs on comic syndication and editorial cartooning—the two genres I was most passionate about. I could never have imagined that, 20 years later, this publication would have an international audience and still be growing.

We’ll be celebrating our 20th anniversary throughout the month. I’ll be publishing a number of retrospective articles that go behind the scenes of some of the biggest turning points and stories I covered.

Over the past two years, I’ve spent considerable time contemplating the future of this news site. Some things are clearer than others, but I can promise that any changes in the coming months and years will honor our tagline: providing “daily news and opinion for professional cartoonists.”

For longtime readers, I cannot express enough gratitude for your support—by visiting, commenting, contacting, and welcoming us into your communities and associations. I also want to recognize my two partners, D.D. Degg and Mike Peterson, who joined in 2018. Their contributions to what The Daily Cartoonist is today cannot be overstated.

My next article will be a look at the stats of this site. A few stats that surprised me include:

  • The article that generated the most comments
  • Who has commented the most in the last 20 years
  • Who were the most active commentators each year

Let us know in the comments your prediction on any of the questions above.

And finally, in my retrospective mood, I had to dig into the archives to see how the site transformed over the years.

  3. Happy Anniversary! Looking forward to the retrospectives. This site is irreplaceable. Also wondering who drew the new avatars.

  4. Congratulations from Italy!

  5. Hey Alan! Long time listener, first time caller! I’ve been lurking the Daily Cartoonist for nearly the entire twenty years. (Has it really been that long?)

Congrats to you and your staff on achieving the big two-oh!

  6. Bodacious congratulations! I enjoy reading The Daily Cartoonist every day!

  7. First thing I read every morning! Congrats and thanks so much

  8. 20 years just flew by! Congrats!

  9. Congratulations and a tip of the green eye shade on this terrific milestone, rare in the digital era. You, Mike and D.D. have covered the business of syndication like Dave Astor once did for Editor and Publisher Magazine, which my Dad the late Bob Mathes represented for 22 years. Your commentaries are ripped from the headlines with US and international comics and editorial cartoons. The Daily Cartoonist is a must read beyond the profession for serving feature editors and opinion editors, students and academics, those in publishing and the media. The syndication business has cratered since I was editor of international syndication at Tribune (once TMS) in the 1990s. I look forward to you finding a solid future in the years ahead. Thanks for your service!

  10. Congratulations. This is one of my must-read sites every day and DD and Mike do a great job. It’s nice to see you back to writing again as well. Keep up the good work.

  11. Congrats! Been reading the Daily Cartoonist since high school. One of my daily reads.

  12. Thanks, Alan. Speaking on behalf of editorial cartoonists, this site has been and continues to be indispensable in keeping the genre relevant.

  13. Commendations, kudos, and a cacophonous call for riotous revelry. Thanks for helping me keep what’s left of my sanity the last few years.

  14. Heck of a milestone! Congratulations

  15. Congrats from a fellow 20+ year blogger. We’ve gone from cutting edge to quaintly old-fashioned together!

  16. Happy 20 years, here’s for another 2 decades more or less, as long as Walt Wallet and Gasoline Alley try to stay alive.

  17. Bon Anniversaire ! Continuez encore 20 ans de plus.

  18. Congratulations to “The Daily Cartoonist” and staff for 20 years! Thank you for your dedicated work! I have been greatly honored by the times you’ve covered my activities as a cartoonist and I really appreciate it. Thank you again!

  19. Congratulations! I am just a lowly fan of comics of all types, in my retirement I spend hours each morning reading hundreds of comics, they are for me one of the best ways of representing life in these times. I’m shocked that I only discovered this blog in the past year, and am regretting all that I missed over the years, but can thank for introducing me to many new-to-me artists in the short time I’ve been stopping by. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this now important stop in my daily web perusal.

  20. Congrats and thanks for sticking around for 20 years. I’m a guy who had a strip syndicated back in the 80’s and to see the art form still around is amazing to me. Here’s hoping the art form continues and thrives and The Daily Cartoonist is there to mark the ups and downs for years to come.

  21. Great job!!! Happy Anniversary! 😊

  22. Congratulations! Well done and here’s hoping you keep up a good community here.

  23. Amen to everything said above! A day without Daily Cartoonist is like a day without coffee!

  24. Congratulations from Namibia! (south-western Africa)

  25. Congratulations on two decades — a veritable eternity online!
