Of Cats, Cranks and Confusion
Skip to commentsHumberto Aguirre’s “Top Five in Comic Cats”
A cat defeated by Mickey Mouse, a robot cat from the future, a thriller cat, a porn cat, and a transgender cat. The comic universe is a space populated by pornographic cats, robot cats, and sadistic and obscene cats that often opened the way for that species to the world of the audiovisual industry and merchandising.
The wild, weird, and wonderful world of comic book cats is Humberto Aguirre’s “top five in comic cats,” three of which are comic strip cats. More about that “cat defeated by Mickey Mouse” and the “transgender cat.”

Exploring Calvin and Hobbes revisits the beloved comic strip created by Bill Watterson from 1985 to 1995 and explores his mastery of the comic strip art form through engaging characters, thoughtful writing and creative layouts.

West Virginia’s News publishes the Fenimore Art Museum press release about a Bill Watterson art exhibit about a boy and his cat, a cat that proved even more popular than Felix.
The exhibition will feature original Calvin and Hobbes daily and Sunday strips as well as specialty pieces by Watterson from his collection of more than 3,000 originals housed at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at The Ohio State University. Calvin and Hobbes appeared in 2,400 newspapers worldwide at the height of its popularity. Watterson won the National Cartoonists Society’s prestigious Reuben Award for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year” in both 1986 and 1988.
Crankshaft Borrows Dick Tracy Panels
Two panels from Today’s Crankshaft and two panels from Dick Tracy nearly 70 years ago.

I’ll guess that Tom Batiuk chose the panels and Dan Davis did the touching up. Or maybe they came already touched up from The Complete Chester Gould Dick Tracy series from The Library of American Comics. If you missed those hardcovers the series is coming back in slipcased softcover editions from Clover Press.
