The Daily Planet’s Comics Page

From Chavez Mauricio and the Classic Comics Strips Facebook page:

The SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES season two episode “Mxyzpixilated”, shows a brief glance at the Daily Planet’s comic strip section, and it’s a wonderful homage to a dozen classic strips of old, while including several of the show’s creators!

*DINI THE MEANY is a “Calvin and Hobbes” homage…

*GLEEN is based on Peanuts and stars animators Shane Glines and Glen Murakami

*DAN DANGER is based on Dick Tracy and stars director Dan Riba

*MR. MXYZPTLK is credited to Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster (his actual creators)…

*ZUB STREET is not a homage… [a commenter suggests Mel Lazarus]

Barry Windsor-Smith lent a hand to the production of this 1981 horror flick starring Michael Caine as a comic book artist who loses a hand. Windsor-Smith provided the artwork for Caine’s character’s strip “Mandro”, as seen in the film.

  1. That “ZUB STREET” is clearly based on “Momma”, by Mell Lazarus, whose real name was “Melvin”, but signed his work with a double “L”.

  2. And Dini the Meaney refers to Paul Dini.

  3. Wow! Mandro must be one of the most beautiful strips in fake history.

The kids did amazing work on those cartoons. Does my heart good to see these.
