Sy Barry Gets Elzie Segar Award

At the National Cartoonists Society’s 79th Reuben Awards [August 15, 2025], comic arts legend Sy Barry will receive the Elzie Segar Award, presented by King Features, in recognition of his enduring influence on the art form.

The National Cartoonists Society announced the honor bestowed on Sy Barry earlier today:

Named after Popeye creator Elzie Segar, this prestigious honor is awarded to a creator whose work has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning. Barry’s extraordinary career exemplifies artistic excellence, elevating the adventure strip genre and inspiring generations of cartoonists.

Sy Barry practiced his art in comic books (1945-1960) and in comic strips (1947-1994).

Sy’s lasting comics legacy is his 33 years on The Phantom comic strip.

  1. Gotta note that Barry’s inks over Toth’s pencils created the DC house style used for approximately fifteen years.

  2. And not a moment too soon (Sy’s 97). As the NCS is a fairly geriatric organization, rather than bestowing the Elsie Segar to a singular individual, they should double or triple the recipients annually they’d like to honor…
