Supreme Court Scolds Hemant Malviya; Grants Protection From Arrest
Skip to commentsYesterday’s hearing before the Supreme Court did not appear to go well for cartoonist Hemant Malviya based on their comments and rebuttals. Today’s hearing was only an improvement in that the justices granted him interim protection from arrest prior to his court date. Despite giving Malviya a reprieve, they opined that he overstepped legal bounds.
After reviewing additional cartoons that may be included in the investigation, one justice said:
One of his posts is really very offensive. It will attract many penal laws. Sadly, today, all sorts of things are happening. Look at the language being used. Anything is being said about anyone.
The Supreme Court allowed Malviya to write and submit an apology before the next hearing. From the Hindustan Times:
The bench said that the apology should be genuine and come from the heart, and not be filed for the sake of it, when advocate Vrinda Grover submitted it on Malviya’s behalf. Grover said that her client writes in Hindi, and she will ask him to prepare an apology in that language. She added that a translated copy of the apology will be submitted to the court.
Malviya’s next hearing is August 15.
