Adam Zyglis Points to Boot Strap Hypocrisy, MAGA Clutches Pearls – Update (Death Threats)

A recent cartoon by Adam Zyglis involving natural disasters and the MAGA philosophy has right wing voices objecting to the “rules for thee, not for me” hypocrisy hitting home. “Now is not the time.”

From Carlos Garcia for The Blaze Media:

‘Twisted, vile, and shameful’

The Buffalo News published a political cartoon appearing to mock right-wing victims in the lethal flooding disaster in Texas, and many on social media were outraged at the news outlet.

The cartoon showed a man with a MAGA hat being swept away in the flood holding a “HELP” sign, while behind him, a word bubble has the famous conservative phrase, “Gov’t is the problem not the solution.”

The cartoon by Adam Zyglis, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist, appeared to accuse conservatives of hypocrisy for asking for help from the federal government during a natural disaster while criticizing the government during brighter times.

Among those who criticized the cartoon was Michael Kracker, the chairman of the Erie County Republican Committee…

After seeing it was a Conservative rile point, Lindsay Kornick and Fox News took up the banner which magnified Right Wing exposure to the cartoon exponentially:

NY paper’s ‘vile’ political cartoon draws outrage for appearing to mock Trump-voting Texas flood victims

Buffalo News cartoonist Adam Zyglis appeared to blame President Trump and DOGE spending cuts for the deadly floods

A political cartoonist for Buffalo News spurred outrage for appearing to mock victims of the devastating flash floods in Texas on Monday with a cartoon depicting a drowning Trump supporter.

Buffalo News’ editorial cartoonist Adam Zyglis seemed to clarify that this text was in reference to Trump supporters’ arguments for smaller government being “swept away” after the flood in an Instagram post.

“Tomorrow’s lines… that argument’s gone in a flash,” Zyglis wrote when posting his cartoon on Monday. He also included tags for “noaa,” “national weather service,” “doge,” “cuts” and “maga.”

The cartoon faced backlash on social media…

Hundreds of comments, mostly negative, at Adam’s Facebook posting of the cartoon.

Same day update:

History museum event featuring cartoonist Adam Zyglis postponed following criticism, death threats

From Buffalo Toronto Public Media:

An event at the Buffalo History Museum featuring Buffalo News cartoonist Adam Zyglis scheduled for tonight [July 10, 2025] has been postponed.

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild and the museum said they had “serious” concerns for public safety, even involving Buffalo police.

The guild said the Pulitzer Prize-winning Zyglis and his family have been receiving death threats following a recent cartoon published that depicts a man with a Make America Great Again hat being swept away in Texas flood waters, with a sign saying “HELP.”

From WIVB News:

The Buffalo Newspaper Guild said Zyglis has received death threats following the publishing of the cartoon, as well as other threats toward his family.

“Zyglis is an opinion cartoonist who puts his name to every cartoon he draws,” the union said in a statement. “…The Buffalo Newspaper Guild will not stand for physical threats of harm against him and his family. Those who stoop to such cowardly, disgraceful and anonymous acts must be held accountable.”

  1. Democrats can’t exist without slinging hate.

    1. Have you listened to your president lately?

    2. I’ve stepped back and squinted and looked at Zyglis’s cartoon several times, and I can’t detect him slinging any hate. Sorrow, sure, maybe even sympathy and recognition that some folks want government out of their lives so much that they’re willing to watch hundreds die for it. I don’t see hate.

On the other hand, just a few days ago President Trump said of Democrats, “They wouldn’t vote only because they hate Trump, but I hate them, too, you know? I really do. I hate them. I cannot stand them, because I really believe they hate our country.”

Try a little thought experiment and imagine what the reaction would have been if Joe Biden had said that about Republicans. Just imagine! But of course he never did or would, and in fact most of his Inflation Reduction Act and other policies disproportionately benefitted red states because he saw himself as president of all Americans, not just half of them.

I also echo Cheapskate0’s comment below. Waiting for the right time only guarantees there will never be a right time. Because there’s always another crisis or disaster. Thoughts and prayers.

      1. Agreed, I don’t see anything making fun of the tragic loss of life in Texas! I don’t see anything in this cartoon wishing harm onto anyone! I do see the fact that yes, this cartoon is pointing out the fact that the government is cutting vial resources that has contributed to this unspeakable tragedy! I would NEVER wish this devastating loss of life and the challenges that was a result to this what should have been a celebration of life & liberty. I did not know any of these folks, but my heart goes out to them with all the loss of life no matter their views in these somber days! My heart goes out to all that has been affected by this freak tragedy in Texas and surrounding locations.

      2. This line…”this cartoon is pointing out the fact that the government is cutting vial resources that has contributed to this unspeakable tragedy!” is a bold-faced lie and part of the problem not only with the misinformation by the MSM but also those who actually believe (without any doubt) that every word is true. This tragedy had NOTHING to do with politics. It is saddening and disgusting that people do not bother to search out the truth but jump at the very moment to criticize blame on whatever political party they can. These were human beings that lost their lives. That fact seems to be obliterated by whatever party they were affiliated, which by the way, no one knows, and then lay the results based on that premise. It is disgusting and dehumanizing that such persons exist who cannot place the value of human life above their own hatred of political standing. God help them; they are without a soul.

    3. “Politicizing a tragedy” and “hate” is all we ever hear whenever someone makes a comment about recent events. But when Hortman got assassinated, the right lied and claimed that the shooter was a leftist, when he was in fact a Trump-voting anti-abortion extremist. So let’s not pretend conservatives are above politicizing a tragedy and even lying about it. Between that and their constant bashing and hatred of LGBT+ people, and not caring if people will die from medicaid cuts, I don’t have a shred of sympathy for hurt conservative feelings. They spent the last several years telling us our feelings didn’t matter, “fuck your feelings,” etc, why shouldn’t we respond in kind?

    4. Nobody, nobody l, hates like Donald J Trump…

    5. There goes that Maga projection of their bad behavior onto others.

    6. what you’re doing here is called DARVO

      1. DARVO is such an interesting lens through which to examine this political dynamic, because our country’s political conversation has literally become an abusive cycle between intimate partners: Both sides talk past each other, both sides are hurt and invalidate the others’ hurt. It’s all valid hurt. And it’s going to be all of our responsibility to stop screaming, start listening, and remember that honest disagreement is the mechanism by which democracy persists.

  2. Okay. I’ll nibble.

Republicans complaining about Democrats pointing out their failings. Check out the Facebook page above to see how Republicans are still piling on about Newsum and others. If you think this is “piling on” by Democrats, you ain’t seen nothin’ compared to Republicans. But more important:

DDD mentions “Now is not the time,” a refrain I have heard regarding this subject.

But it’s also a refrain we hear all the time when something like Uvalde happens.

Tell me, if when a terrible event happens, if the answer to the discussion is, “Now is not the time,”

Then when the Sam Hill is the right time?

When everybody has forgotten all about it?

    And the next Columbine happens?

The next drought? The next fire? The next flood?

If the only answer to obvious problems is to wait until it’s not obvious anymore,

No wonder nothing ever gets done about anything.

  3. I wasn’t really feeling loved on July 4th by Don J. … just sayin’.

  4. About how this Tragedy is not Political, there videos online on how they were given 10 million dollars to install and early warning system, but spent it elsewhere, and didn’t want it, be cause it was “Biden’s Communist” money. So while Cancun Ted Cruz, says that we shouldn’t be figuring it out now, he does 2 really want to figure it out later either.
