More On The Macanudo TV Series

The premise of Macanudo is that two children living in Nuevo Aires, Henrietta and Martincito, possess imaginations so powerful that it gives them the special ability to see the invisible, magical world underlying the lives of children everywhere. This power is called “Macanudo,” giving the strip its name. In its native country, the strip is super popular and has been printed in over 50 books.

Mercury Filmworks has announced they’re currently developing an animated series based on the Argentinian comic strip Macanudo, created by cartoonist Ricardo Liniers Siri, who signs as Liniers. King Features Syndicate, who translates and distributes the strip in the US, is co-producing alongside Mercury in Canada and Sun Creature in France.

Peter Paltridge for Anime Superhero has more details about the animated Macanudo in development.

“Macanudo is a singular piece of storytelling — poetic, philosophical, and full of joy — and it presents a rare opportunity to create a series that resonates as deeply with adults as it does with kids,” said Clint Eland, CEO of Mercury Filmworks. “We’re thrilled to partner with Sun Creature and King Features to bring Liniers’ whimsical world to life through animation, and to introduce a whole new generation to the quiet magic that Macanudo offers.”

  1. I wonder if this is successful if it will, as a result get Macanudo into more papers?

  2. While many cartoon strips have been turned into television cartoons and even full-length theatrical movies, the vast majority of those productions have been of abysmally poor quality in comparison to the source material. Even the Peanuts specials turned into forgettable repetition after the first three installments.

I seriously doubt that any television production will be able to capture the ineffable surrealism of Liniers’ strip; viewers who become used to predigested humor on the screen may have difficulty comprehending his open-ended and often indeterminate compositions on paper.

The participation of King Features as co-producer is not a good sign, witness the Popeye garbage that they are inflicting on every visitor to the Comics Kingdom website. Many of the original (b&w) Popeye cartoons by Dave Fleischer were brilliant, but those later (color) cartoons shown on the website are simply not worth watching.
