Steve Breen Leaves inewsource
Skip to commentsCartoonist Steve Breen has accepted the position of Director of School Communications at San Diego’s Cathedral Catholic High School leaving him precious little time for his regular duties at inewsource.

Steve informed readers of his Drawing Conclusions newsletter this weekend:
All good things must come to an end! I appreciate you so much for following my exploits over the last year and a half via Drawing Conclusions.
In bittersweet news, I have decided to leave inewsource and take a position at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego. I’ll put my skills as a journalist, artist and digital content strategist to use as their new director of school communications.
Breen joined inewsource, a nonprofit, investigative news site, in November of 2023 as editorial cartoonist and “to help our reporters tell their groundbreaking investigations visually, artistically.” As such Steve was part of the team that was announced as a Pulitzer Prize finalist this year in the Illustrated Reporting and Commentary category for their “Fentanyl: A Decade of Death.”
Steve adds that he will continue working with inewsource on a freelance basis:
I’ll still be doing illustrated storytelling on a freelance basis for inewsource and you can still follow Cartoonishness on Substack [link added].
But his editorial cartoons (and his caption contest?) for inewsource will be seriously curtailed, if not ending.

Steve’s career as editorial cartoonist began with the Asbury Park Press in 1994. He joined The San Diego Union-Tribune staff in 2001 and remained there until the paper was bought by the Alden Global Capital (MediaNews Group) investment firm in 2023. whereupon he joined inewsource.
While a Pulitzer Prize finalist for inewsource in 2025, Steve was a Pulitzer Prize winner in 1998 for his work at the Asbury Park Press and again in 2009 while at The San Diego Union-Tribune. (So imagine that accolades he will being to Cathedral Catholic.)
Steve will continue drawing editorial cartoons for the Creators Syndicate and creating children’s books.
May 27, 2025 Correction: At the request of a MediaNews Group representative the description of Alden Global Capital has been changed from “hedge fund” to “investment firm.” I have been informed that “Alden has not been a hedge fund for quite some time.”
