Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Gold Diggers of 2012

Piranha
Piranha 2

Piranha Club, always an excellent source of retro humor, has started a story arc that, like all its really good arcs, will have readers saying, "Okay, I shouldn't laugh at this …" and then laughing.

I'm running both yesterday's and today's strip to add a little more context, but here's what you need to know: Daryl, the heir above, is a useless, sodden, incoherent drunkard who spends his days at the bar attempting to convince people that his frog has some unusual talent.

Yes, there probably IS a more compassionate way to describe him. Why do you ask?

Anyway, as you see, Daryl suddenly has an unusual talent of his own: The ability to make diamonds and sports cars and Jimmy Chooz appear!

Which, in turn, leads to an ability to make beautiful women — and Earl in drag — appear.

Is it demeaning to women to make jokes about gold diggers?

I dunno. Is it demeaning to men to make jokes about guys who lose all judgment in the presence of large breasts?

'Cause I'm gonna let you in on a little secret: Despite the societal advances of recent decades, there still are such men. No, really. There are.

And, while maybe mothers no longer say to their daughters, "It's just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor man," and while "How to Marry a Millionaire" seems in many ways like the 59-year-old movie it is, pray leave us not bullshit one another.

Besides, Bud Grace recently wrapped up a storyline in which he explained the origins of Quacko the Talking Duck and his wife, Beardo the Bearded Woman.

Yeah, I got your sophisticated intellectual humor right here, pal.

Mind you, this recommendation is coming from someone who thinks the movie alluded to in today's headline still holds up pretty well.
