Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Cartoon Classic: The Greatest Generation of Cartoonists

One of the books my father gave me in my adult years was his copy of "Best of Yank," a wartime compilation of that landmark newspaper that I spent more time perusing than he did.

In addition to cartoons, the GIs on staff and in the field sent back some good illustrations of their lives at the front and I'll share some at some point.

Today, however, I'm featuring a pair of familiar names from back when they were fighting Hitler and Tojo with one hand and cartooning with the other.

Jaffee

Keane
Note that, while Pfc. Keane's first name is spelled with two "L's" by the editor, he has signed the cartoon with only one.

And that Sgt. Jaffee's sense of humor was much the same back then, though this Mother Jones interview suggests his life was not all beer and skittles in those days.

Incidentally, for Mad Magazine fans with a bit of cash burning a hole in their pockets, Al Jaffee has just published a complete book of his fold-ins that is getting good feedback within the cartooning community.

Mike Peterson has posted his "Comic Strip of the Day" column every day since 2010. His opinions are his own, but we welcome comments either agreeing or in opposition.
