   It’s funny, but didn’t FAR SIDE do a similar one showing a house cat peering at a collision in front of his house of two delivery trucks, one from Al’s Small Rodents, the other Bill’s Flightless Birds?

   That’s a different gag — that would be a cat seeing all sorts of potential snacks beyond its reach. This is a dog seeing all of his most hated enemies wrapped up in a single entity — which is why the fact that the cat/postman is delivering squirrels lifts it beyond a simple gag into immortality. A world in which a cat/postman shows up with squirrels every day would be very threatening indeed!
