Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Now they BOTH know he’s an idiot

Candor
The ongoing tale of Lemont's college crush picks up a little speed today at Candorville. Darrin Bell is a deft-enough storyteller that you know he's not going to make the fatal mistake of ever letting Lemont and Susan get together, and it would be just as bad to let Lemont realize that Susan isn't just his buddy.

Which makes it wonderful fun to watch him steer the strip towards the cliff and turn away, yet again, at the last second. It's like the difference between metal roller coasters, which simply offer lots of speed and g-force, and wooden roller coasters, which are purposely engineered with a degree of rattle and shake, and are often given lousy paint jobs in order to provide the illusion that maybe they just aren't properly maintained and maybe you're going to go off the tracks this time.

Candorville is a wooden roller coaster. Or maybe it really is about to fly apart. But it's a helluvalot better and more fun ride than you'd get on a metal coaster.

  1. See, it sounds like you’re lobbying Darrin Bell to keep Susan and Lemont apart! I’ve read the strip for a few years, and I’m still hoping that they get together down the road, and I bet that if Bell decides to do that, he’ll keep finding veins of humor and reflection.
Thanks so much for the blog.

  2. Moonlighting and Cheers are the classic responses. Release the sexual tension and you reframe the relationship – they become a hip, urban version of Dagwood and Blondie. And there’s a very close example within comics — The Norm, which I respect greatly, took a completely different tack when Norm and Reine married. He was one of the great hip-but-clueless bachelors, but faded when that aspect of his life was no longer unresolved. And, heck, it’s just a reflection of reality — my life was a lot funnier before I got married, and even after my divorce, being single was not as ridiculous anymore. I really like Edge City, but I like Candorville for other reasons!
