When the tenor of political debate seems to have become too much, Bad Reporter steps in to reassure you that you haven't lost your marbles. It really is that bad out there.
And I've gotta say it is getting depressing. On the one hand, it's discouraging to think that anybody could take the notion of "Senator Christine O'Donnell" seriously, let alone enough people to actually make it happen. On the other hand, is it really necessary to find the least flattering photos of the woman to run with articles that oppose her? Don Asmussen didn't have to search through a lot of files to find that shot of her — it's been on HuffPost several times. Grow the hell up, people.
I was thinking the other day that the period in which Watergate occurred was incredibly disturbing and discouraging, but when the hearings began, there was a glimmer, however faint, that something positive might come of it. I hardly expected Nixon to be forced out of office and at least a few of his minions to be sent off to prison, however, and when the end came, it felt like a vindication of 200 years of history.
Despite the far left, that wanted a full trial to wring every last drop of blood from the corpse. Despite the far right, who made of Gordon Liddy a hero. The majority of Americans clearly absorbed the lesson and cheered the restoration of decency and honesty.
Y'know, before they went to the polls and rejected first Jerry Ford and then Jimmy Carter, two of the more decent, honest individuals who have held the office.
And now we face what looks more like a food fight than an election, and you wonder how many times Lady Liberty can pull the rabbit back out of the hat, in an era in which the best lack all conviction while the worst are full of passionate
intensity.
While we watch, the occasional mocking tale or gibe is welcome relief.
