Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Pros, Cons, Laughs

Prosandcons

This strip by Kieran Meehan tends to fly below the radar, but I get a chuckle out of it regularly and a real laugh far more often than average. Originally titled "A Lawyer, A Doctor and a Cop," it's now called "Pros and Cons" but is still about a lawyer, a doctor and a cop.

Meehan is an interesting fellow who lives in Glasgow and whose web site contains quite a bit of humor beyond the cartoons there. For instance, he describes his somewhat complicated parentage at length, concluding, "Three of my grandparents were Irish, my dad's father was an iron worker on one
of the Clyde shipyards, the fourth was Lancastrian. Allowing myself some
latitude with the accents, I'm a Glaswegian /Lancastrian/ Irish /Cockney.
Counting a Welsh great grandfather, I'm pretty much a typical British Isles
mongrel. I like mongrels. They're less inclined to take themselves too
seriously, or go barking mad."

Meehan may not be barking mad, but his characters — particularly the patients, clients and cons — have a sensibility that goes way over the line and makes up much of the humor, as in this strip. I sometimes have to ask myself if I'm laughing over the punchline, or the genial, loony cheerfulness of the person delivering it.  Other times, I don't ask.

  1. One of the things I love about this strip is the way he draws all his criminals – in court they’re always in a suit and tie, and in jail, even in a lineup, they always wear a shirt with a collar. I guess the brit criminals are classier than ours 🙂
