Kingdom Comics
Skip to commentsFrom Comics Kingdom we check in on The Phantom, Flash Gordon, Mutts, Rosebuds, and The Family Circus plus a trip to The Kingdom of Id.
The Plane, The Plane
One of our phavourite games to play here at Chronicle Chamber is trying to guess what direction Tony DePaul‘s stories will go.
If you have been reading the current Sunday strip, “The Ungraved” (S195), you will know that The Phantom is investigating a mysterious plane, believed to be from World War II, that is circling above the Wambesi Forest before ‘crashing’ into the forest and disappearing. After tracking the plane’s trajectory into the forest, The Phantom has come across its wreckage.

Stephen East at Chronicle Chamber traces the history of the airplane in the Sunday story of The Phantom.
This leaves us with a mighty puzzle to ponder. How does a B-17 that is suffering from engine failure and lands in Denmark end up in the Wambesi Forest?
New Flash Gordon Anthology
Papercutz is going with an anthology format for the second volume of its middle-grade Flash Gordon graphic novels, with short comics by Art Baltazar, Franco Aureliani, John Patrick Green (InvestiGators), Stan Sakai, Mike Cavallaro (Nico Bravo), Rich Koslowski, Dawn Griffin, Maria Scrivan (Nat Enough), Rachel Ordway, Ryan Estrada (Banned Book Club, Student Ambassador), TEBO, Chris Giarrusso (G-Man), Mike Kunkel (Herobear and the Kid), Jim Keefe, Alexis Fajardo (Kid Beowulf), and Alex Schumacher.

Brigid Alverson at ICv2 previews the new Flash Gordon with 11 pages from the 112 page November 2025 book.
The 112-page anthology, rated for ages 7-12, will be released on November 4, 2025, in two formats, a paperback with an MSRP of $9.99 and a hardcover with an MSRP of $14.99.
The Jim Keefe promo from Jim Keefe’s Substack where he talks about his second Flash Gordon story since the end of his run in 2003. (His first since then was the opening Flash Forward episode.)
The Kingdom of Id
I happened to catch last week a Wizard of Id “Classics” in which The King and Sir Rodney were trying to catch The Lone Haranguer, a character who I don’t think was ever seen (at least not clearly) and was known for shouting “The King is a fink!” much to the annoyance of The King. The idea that The King was regularly called a fink and that he tried to catch/imprison anyone who said as much was a running gag during Johnny Hart’s tenure on the strip.

Sean Kleefeld makes a request of the current Mastroianni and Hart Wizard of Id team.
I can’t recall the last time I saw a “the king is a fink” joke of any sort.
So I did a little digging. The most recent instance I can find of a variation on that joke is from 2014.
Sean missed a few: February 8, 2015; November 7, 2016; July 27, 2021; January 25, 2024.
New Mutts
As long as I’m listing dates of comic strips: February 23, 2025; May 17, 2025; and June 8, 2025.

Those are the three dates of new Mutts comic strips this year, the latest being this past Sunday.
Your Daily Rosebuds
Last week we noted that Rosebuds had gone daily. Sunday Comics Kingdom did the same.
Here’s some news worth sharing: Deon Parson’s comic Rosebuds has officially gone daily on Comics Kingdom as of June 1st!
Going daily isn’t just about frequency; it’s a chance for Deon to explore more detailed storylines and dive deeper into the sisters’ everyday dynamic. Newspaper editors also noticed the change, keen to introduce Rosebuds to new print readers, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Does that mean Rosebuds is now a daily syndicated comic strip?
Anyway, that brings us to…
Today’s Synchronicity

Which in turn tees up…
The Family Circus Circle

The Family Circus is one of the most popular comics in the world. But if you dig beneath the surface, there’s something strange going on.
