Australian Cartoonists Association Releases Policy on AI

The Australian Cartoonists Association has formally released their policy on generative artificial intelligence. ACA Deputy President David Blumenstein made the announcement on his Instagram and Facebook accounts.
Similar to statements from other cartooning associations, ACA maintains that generative AI tools are not consistent with their values of “giving a forum to human art creators and encouraging the making of artwork by professionals and the public alike… taking full part in the writing and drawing process and being in all respects the creator of your own works.”
The ACA is the first cartooning organization to raise ethical considerations regarding AI platforms’ impact on the environment due to the “overwhelming amounts of power to run.” It also is the first to require any member whose work is called into question must provide “reasonable evidence of their creative process and authorship.”
Here are the six policy points.
- The ACA does not support the use of generative AI to replace the creative contribution of cartoonists, illustrators and writers.
- The ACA will not knowingly publish, exhibit or promote works that have been predominantly generated by AI. Such works will not be eligible for the Stanley Awards.
- This does not prevent the ACA from discussing, reviewing or educating members about generative AI and its impact on the cartooning and illustration industries.
- ACA members are expected to be transparent about their creative process and must not knowingly present predominantly AI-generated work as their own original creative work.
- Where there are reasonable grounds to believe that a work submitted, exhibited, published or entered in an ACA activity has been substantially created by generative AI, the member may be asked to provide reasonable evidence of their creative process and authorship.
- A member who knowingly represents predominantly AI-generated work as their own will have their membership status reviewed.
