I pass on the relief I felt when I saw the “GH” in a Hagar the Horrible. Gary Hallgren frequently lets us know he is still ghosting Hagar by slipping in his initials but it had been six weeks (August 9) since the last sighting and I had begun to worry that the former underground cartoonist had retired. I mention Underground cartoonist because Hallgren’s Thursday Hagar comes dangerously close to some of his adult art of those days:
In Sync
Is it tiger week? Liniers does another of his wonderful weeklong adaptations in Macanudo this time illustrating William Blake’s The Tyger (starts here), while Samkin in The Saga of Brann Bjornson is adopting Chesterton, a tiger (starts here). And then both of them referenced Calvin and Hobbes.
Then Randy Milholland introduces us to the tiger Murderclaw as Mr. Jack’s roommate in today’s Popeye.
Another “old” comic strip character also appeared this week.
Dee Parson brought back Ana from his first published comic strip Life With Kurami into his current Rosebuds. Life With Kurami ran from April 6, 2015 – Oct. 28, 2017 in The (Elwood Ind.) Herald Bulletin Parson’s hometown newspaper and where Rosebuds currently runs.
Back in My Day…
The innuendo of that Lio strip wouldn’t have passed muster with uptight editors.
And smelling a horse’s ass? That’s would have been a bit iffy.
I’ve started reading Trudeau & Doonesbury and there was a time Doonesbury got pulled from newspapers for less than using a vulgarity like “asshat.”
In Sync Reprise
I get the feeling Caroline Cash is looking ahead as to what is upcoming in Nancy Classics.
I don’t know if it has happened before but the wallpaper in today’s Garfield struck me as out of the ordinary. I do like the title panel tribute to Peanuts.
With all the kid’s books being mentioned or shown in today’s Sunday funnies I had to check to see if The Autobiography of a Zombie Mortician was a real book.
