Cartooning for Peace Turns 20

Cartooning for Peace celebrated its 20th anniversary yesterday in Paris. A special recognition was also given to Safaa Odah who recently arrived in France after two years of trying to leave Gaza.
The organization came from a vision of then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and cartoonist Plantu in the wake of the violence and outrage after the the printing of the Prophet Muhammad cartoons in 2006. They viewed editorial cartoons as playing “a central role in democratic debate, intercultural dialogue and ‘living together’.”
The day also marks the release of the book “Let’s stand up for democracy!” The book features 150 editorial cartoons “to bring democracy to life.”
