81st Annual Reuben Awards and NCS Conference
San Diego, August 12–14, 2027
From the National Cartoonists Society (NCS):
You may be thinking — didn’t we just go to San Diego? We did, in 2024! And we’re going back on purpose.
For 36 years, from 1947-1982, The Reuben Awards and Banquet was held in New York City, a majority of members lived either there or close to it (Cartoon County). Then for 41 years, from 1983-2023 the NCS spread the fun and games to cities around the United States, and sometimes beyond (The Bahamas, Toronto, Cancun). Now, beginning in 2024, they have returned to a regular setting, or a rotation of three anyway.

Says NCS event manager Jessica Halstead:
A few years ago, with feedback from members, the NCS board decided to trial a “hub city” model — rotating between three partner cities (San Diego, Boston, and Columbus) instead of a new city every year. Why? Because building real community partnerships takes time, and returning to cities where we’ve already built relationships means better public-facing events, lower expenses, and less burnout for the volunteers who make this all happen — all while keeping your registration costs as low as possible.
And for those wondering about the 2027 San Diego Comic Con – it will happen 3 weeks before The Reubens.
