Jeffrey Koterba Producing Animated Series

Editorial cartoonist Jeff Koterba is co-producing an “adult-leaning” animated series called Bunny and Bear based on a comic strip idea he came up with during the pandemic. His co-producers include screen writer Christine Burright, and animator and improv comedian Matt Geiler. All three, along with voice talent, are based in Omaha.
The project started with Jeffrey and Christine “riffing” about his comic strip idea and agreed it would be better as an animated series that they could pitch to a Hollywood studio. “Then we got to thinking that maybe we could give it a shot on our own, with a team in Omaha. We could own the IP and all that,” Jeffrey says. They later brought in their friend Matt, who is both an animator and comedian, to bring the drawn characters to life.
Explaining why he’s calling it an “adult-leaning” show, Jeffrey says, “we wanted the show to be inviting, with sort of that retro Hanna-Barbera mid-mod feel.” He continues, “but without the innocence of a show like that. So we DO deal with sexual themes but not in a crude way. We’re always going for kindness and humanity even when dealing with themes for mature audiences.”
The trio are currently crowdfunding to raise funds for the launch of the six-episode season this fall.

The characters deal with everyday human problems in a way that feels familiar, funny and heartfelt. The humor is adult, but not too adult. It’s a thoughtful blend that is never crass or sappy.
The obstacles the characters face are hard, but not impossibly hard. Like all of us, these creatures are waking up everyday and trying to out their best foot (or paw) forward.
And no matter whether someone is a mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird or otherwise, they belong. The world of Bunny and Bear is inclusive to everyone — no questions asked and no explanations needed.
As of this writing, their project has raised $1,900 of $10,000 for the first season.
