Big Nate Replacement Thread Redux – Chasing Wallace Updated

Newspapers.com with their 30 day delay has caught up with the June 13, 2026 end of Big Nate dailies.

Unfortunately the Advance Publication papers ran an advertisement for the Sunday Big Nate during that first week so I still don’t what comic strip, if any, has replaced Big Nate in those daily newspapers.

“If any” because a couple papers, at least initially has replaced Big Nate with more space on their funny pages. Those two papers would be The Tampa Bay Times and The Springfield Republican.

(The Springfield Republican is an Advance newspaper but doesn’t comply with the HQ demand for consolidation. I don’t know why.)

Otherwise Wallace the Brave jumped into the lead for replacing Big Nate.

Elsewhere the Maine Trust newspapers of The Portland Press Herald, The Waterville Morning Sentinel, The Kennebec Journal, and The Lewiston Sun-Journal all went with fairly local Will Henry and his Wallace the Brave.

Canada’s Postmedia old school broadsheets in 2022 went with the same comics page for all the newspapers. And so The Windsor Star, The Vancouver Sun, The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, The Ottawa Citizen, The Regina Leader-Post, The Montreal Gazette, The Edmonton Journal, and The Calgary Herald all started running Wallace the Brave on June 15, 2026.

Sound Publication newspapers still allow the individual papers’ editors to pick the comic strips that run on their funny pages, so: The Honolulu Star-Advertiser chose Rosebuds Wallace the Brave (see Rick’s comment below) while The Everett Daily Herald went with Wallace.

If any readers have access to an Advance newspaper please let us know what, if anything, replaced Big Nate in those newspapers.

Advance Update

In the comments Stephen, Grant, and Bob have given us updates for The Big Nate situation in Advance newspapers from three different parts of the nation. Apparently they are all waiting for instructions from HQ before taking any action.

For the two weeks following Big Nate’s last daily the Advance comics page ran the above promo. Four weeks later the Sunday Big Nate has yet to appear in Advance newspapers.

As for the Big Nate space in the weekday papers, as mentioned in the comments below, there is…space.

July 20, 2026 Update:

Advance newspapers have now replaced the dot screen with an in-house ad for their Sunday comics section.

    I’m enjoying reading the Nate reprints online, since I didn’t see them the first time.

  3. I’m happy for Will to pick up more papers in this day and age and I’m happy for the new readers of the best strip being published today.

  4. After a week (maybe two), the Honolulu Star-Advertiser switched to Wallace.

  5. “Big Nate” was replaced with a big blank space in The Oregonian. They haven’t figure out what to do for a replacement yet. They also will not be running the Sunday strip for “cost reasons.” When a daily newspaper cannot afford a comic strip, you know the media is in big trouble.

    1. The Oregonian I believe is one of the Advance newspapers.

Just like for over 3 years and a few months now the Chicago Sun-Times refuses to drop from its Sunday comics the Sunday Grand Avenue comic strip despite the rival major Chicago newspaper – the Chicago Tribune – carrying it in its daily and Sunday Chicago Tribune comics 7 days a week (including Sunday). And the complaining to the Sun-Times to drop the strip because of this by me keeps going on since March 2023 but they may never listen even to my Facebook posts! The Chicago Sun-Times is not owned by Tribune Publishing!

  6. I live in Cleveland, Ohio where THE PLAIN DEALER is an Advance paper. For the first three weeks, or so, after BIG NATE left, its space was filled with an ad announcing that BIG NATE would be running in the Sunday Comics page soon. Now, and for the past few weeks, that ad has disappeared and instead of the ad it’s just a place holder featuring a rectangle full of dots. BIG NATE has yet to show up in the PLAIN DEALER’s Sunday Comics.

    I have no idea when, or if, anything will replace the space holder in BIG NATE’s space of the PLAIN DEALER comics page.

  7. I wish the Chicago Tribune owned suburban newspapers – Elgin Courier News, Naperville Sun, Waukegan News-Sun, Aurora Beacon News, and Daily Southtown – replaced Classic Big Nate reruns with Wallace the Brave.

    1. They replaced them with Red and Rover instead.
