Charlie Hebdo Insults Grieving Football Coach
Skip to commentsThe day after French head coach Didier Deschamps learned of his mother’s death and excused himself from the French World Cup schedule, Charlie Hebdo posted its Cartoon of the Day depicting the coach lifting an urn labeled ‘mom’ along with the words “Didier Deschamps brings the Cup home.” The cartoon, drawn by Felix, has elicited a reaction from politicians and the French Football Federation.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport the president of the French Football Federation called the cartoon shocking and disrespectful.
This cartoon shocked me. We were all Charlie (after the 2015 attack on the newspaper’s editorial office), but I found it very inappropriate towards a man in distress. The FFF supports maximum freedom of expression, but this cartoon is nevertheless disrespectful and indecent.
— French Football Federation president, Philippe Diallo
This controversy comes after the satirical newspaper drew criticism for publishing a cartoon on the day of a memorial service joking about the Crans-Montana ski resort New Year’s Eve fire that claimed the lives of 40 individuals and injured over 100 others back in January.
