Why Don’t We Do It in the Comics

9 Chickweed Luann – Two for Tuesday

So we are accustomed to Arlo and Janis‘ subtle side glances to sex and 9 Chickweed Lane‘s more direct indications. But Greg and Karen Evans have taken syndicated mainstream comic strips to a new level this week, with two twenty-somethings naked all week long.

Acknowledging Creators

The week started out with some cartoonists being saluted.

Prickly City honored the comic’s creator Scott Stantis on his retiring from the strip. Drabble celebrated father Ralph’s birthday.

But the Drabble colorist Cristi, who happens to be the cartoonist’s wife, snuck in an Easter Egg celebrating Kevin Fagan‘s birthday:

Also, for the record, Monday (June 22, 2026) saw Kit Mills once more take on the guest artist role for Gil Thorp.

And Caroline Cash continues to pay homage to Nancy creator Ernie Bushmiller.

Speaking of Ages and Aging

Taking her age into consideration we accept that she was around when Beowulf was a child, but last week Russell Myers stretched those limits too far, unless time travel is a part of Broom-Hilda‘s witchcraft:

This week I was taken aback as the Rex Morgan, M.D. story returned to the Morgan family. My goodness, little Sarah has had a major growth spurt! I had to go back to make sure and the last time we saw Sarah see barely came up to June’s shoulders. That was four and a half months ago.

Okay, taller than I remember but still a very decent height increase. Soon the Morgan children will be taking over the strip they did with Judge Parker.

Click Bait

I too laughed at such a take down of online journalism, especially politically charged sites where the click bait headline and the actual story do not exactly match.

Guest Starring…

A couple weeks ago the Bjornson family began a beach vacation and I like to think the seagull that shows up there occasionally is the same seagull that makes daily appearances in Wallace’s Snug Harbor.

  1. I never thought of that before! The cow jumped over a moonrise or moonset.

  2. The continuous soft porn in 9CL is simply tiresome, but I cannot see why Luann’s shower sex is any better (or worse) than Doonesbury showing Rick Redfern and Joanie Caucus (naked) in bed nearly 50 years ago. Is it because of the ages of the participants? Or is it the impracticability of starting a family in a shower stall?

    1. It is the week long portrayal of two nudes rather than a one day event.

      1. The Doonesbury arc (in Nov. 1976) lasted four days, although the “compromising” image appeared only at the very end (and some newspapers censored that strip, or replaced the last frame with the first). Given the notorious prudery that still pervades among editors, I would not be surprised if a number of papers skipped over this Luann sequence, too.

    2. It’s not *that* impractical. You could ask my youngest.

  3. I found Luanne charming. But then, I’m a battle-scarred veteran of the Sexual Revolution.
