Petition Created to Prevent Future Eisner Nomination of AI Work

Byron O’Neal, Editor-In-Chief at Comic Book Yeti, has started a petition to change the submission guidelines for future Eisner Award nominations to disqualify any works that used generative AI in the creative process. The petition is in response to the inclusion of Stardust the Super Wizard Anthology in this year’s nominations for Best Anthology which included a one-page AI created image created by Michael Todasco who is open about his use of AI.

From Michael’s LinkedIn account:

My AI persona, Alex Irons, is being published in a new comic book compilation starring the 1940s, public domain superhero, Stardust the Super Wizard. I trained a model on the original Fletcher Hanks artwork and story structure, and the AI generated the published tale. However, don’t buy it for that reason. There are 139 pages of insanely talented human creators who fill the rest of the book, including legends like Mike Allred. A couple of days remain to pre-order a copy. (And per my standard disclaimer- any proceeds I receive from this go directly to charity).

Byron argues that the AI work was never disclosed, but he says that’s not the main issue as “the Eisner’s call for entries does not preclude AI generated content.”

The objective is to gather a significant number of signatures to show to the organizers of the Eisner Awards with hopes that the submission guidelines will be updated before next year’s nomination submissions. As of this writing, there are 882 signers. You can add yours over on Change.org.

  1. The reference to “…future Easter Award nominations…” in the second line would seem to be an autocorrect (or AI?) typo.

    1. Ooops. Too slow. Feel free to delete both of my comments. 🙂

  2. Signature added.

If fake cartoonists want to be published, they should publish their own fake comics. If fake cartoonists want to win awards, they should create their own fake awards.
