WBD/Ketchup Entertainment Drop Coyote vs Acme Trailer

Years after being completed and then written off (shelved) for tax purposes the animated-live action movie that fans insisted on being released is coming to a theater near you this summer.

For a film that has already been written about as much for what happened behind the scenes as what’s on screen, the footage feels like a victory lap and an uplifting punchline to an inside joke that we’re all a part of.

What the trailer makes clear right away is that this isn’t some compromised salvage job. Director Dave Green’s hybrid of live-action and animation leans fully into the Looney Tunes sensibility, with Wile E. Coyote’s long-simmering grievance against the Acme Corporation reframed as a legal comedy.

  1. I wonder why Trump doesn’t use Wiley’s cartoon business card title which said “SUPER-GENIUS, instead of being merely a “stable” one. Modesty, perhaps?

    1. It’s worth noting that Wile E. Coyote introduced himself (verbally) as a “Genius” only in the five cartoons in which he was paired against Bugs Bunny (and not the Road Runner). These were also the only cartoons in which he spoke at all. Given that he doesn’t speak in the upcoming movie (and apparently gets most of his equipment from Acme, rather than inventing it all himself, as he did when hunting Bugs Bunny), it’s a little surprising that they included that business card.

      2. I also know Wile E. Coyote talked in a Tiny Toon Adventures 1990 episode.

  2. Overjoyed to finally see the trailer arrive. This is one movie that I’m going to be waiting in line for the first showing. The last time I did that was The Empire Strikes Back.

  3. I remember “Coyote v. Acme”, the New Yorker short story this was based on, took the form of a legal complaint. (E.g., “The anvil launched from DEFENDANT’s faulty equipment landed not on the intended prey, but instead on the head of the PLAINTIFF, causing PLAINTIFF’s torso to contract and expand like an accordion.”) When they announced they wrote a movie script for it, I wondered how they would structure it. Let’s see.
