CSotD: Gee, mister, I guess you’re kind of a horse’s ass, huh?

Tom the Dancing Bug does a nice takedown on Bill O'Reilly's transparent outing of the real objections to Obama's re-election: That it signifies the end of the "white establishment" (his words) as the guardians of "traditional America."

And Bolling only had to use the tool that O'Reilly had handed him, which was an allusion to the Cleavers.

As those who know me realize, the use of "Leave It To Beaver" as a symbol of brain-dead, dumb-ass, compliant Fifties America is a hot-button topic for me, because not only did the show regularly tackle issues like alcoholism and poverty, but it was repeatedly made clear that the family lived better than many of their neighbors, and the boys were often very directly cautioned against insensitivity and taking their advantages for granted.

Had O'Reilly cited "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," Bolling wouldn't have been able to frame his refutation in such a realistic framework. The dialogue is nicely matched to the tone of the actual characters, right down to "now hold on there" and "golly, mister."

Ward Cleaver would have been genuinely appalled by O'Reilly's attitude and remarks. Bolling did a brilliant job with this, but O'Reilly set him up with a lob shot that gave him the option of gently popping it over the net into an unreachable corner or rearing back and slamming it straight into Billo's forehead.

And he made the right choice.
