CSotD: Piercing the fog

AfghanBlog1color4

Cartoonists Ted Rall, Matt Bors and Steven Cloud have left on a trip that will take them through Afghanistan, with visits to Pakistan and Iran.  Michael Cavna interviewed them for the Washington Post's "Comics Riff" earlier this week and sums up their mission, which is basically to go over there and find out what's going on, without being embedded or sponsored or necessarily wanted.

Rall is blogging the experience here. Scroll down to the bottom and start reading up — there are currently only a few entries, so you can catch up quickly. Or become frightened quickly. There are some things that require a lot of planning and advance work, and there are things that fall under the "Man plans, the gods laugh" category.

It is a noble enterprise, to venture into the war zone to report without being on the Official Tour and it may well be that, having done it once before, Rall has done precisely the amount of planning that it calls for, and that anything more detailed would fall apart the first day anyway. And whatever they bring back will provide a different perspective, both in terms of what they see and in terms of how they express it.

In any case, it's detriments like them who built this bloody journalism profession. I just hope they know a secret handshake or two, and don't overstay whatever welcome they find.
