   Stone soup
Just enough of an exaggeration to be funny. Stone Soup hits the mark again.

My mother didn't carry a change of clothes for herself in her purse, but, boy, the rest of it was in there. She carried a cloth diaper for years after any of us were young enough to need a diaper. That wasn't what it was for — it was for everything else.

I remember one Sunday, we were sitting in church and some kid in the next family over began to *urp*. She had that diaper out of her purse and under his chin like Zorro flicking a bullwhip. Kid barfed right into it while his own mother looked like she'd just seen Wonder Woman.
