CSotD: Tis the season

When the glurge and dreck of the season become too much, you can always count on Retail to keep it real. Never mind jokes involving elves — these are the people who really have to deal with the demands of the holidays.
The nice thing about Retail is that you don't have to have put in a lot of time in the business to get the jokes. I forget how many weeks I spent selling art supplies, but it wasn't long. It also wasn't long before I became a "manager," though I was still being paid by the hour. If you ever feel you need the word "manager" attached to your name, head on down to the mall and put in a few applications. As soon as they find out you're willing to stay late and close up, you'll be a manager. I was the night manager. I think I was there for two months, but it might not have been that long.
Becoming night manager wasn't the end of the line, though it took nearly a week to ascend to that height. I could have stuck around longer and eventually gotten myself on a level with Marla, where you are salaried and you never, ever get another day off that doesn't involve being called in for one reason or another.
It didn't take me that long to wise up. But I'm glad Norm Feuti went through it all, because this is one of my favorite strips, and this time of year, it just gets better and better.
