Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Roulez encore, et encore, et encore

Damien Glez

Damien Glez, who was born in France but makes his home in Burkina Faso, did this cartoon for Amnesty International in Switzerland. I love his style to begin with, and I've always had an affection for game board satires, too, which makes this cartoon, with its succession of tiny Damien Glez cartoons, a lot of fun.

However, since this particular piece went straight to Switzerland, I don't think a translated version is going to appear anywhere — or, at least, not an English translation. For those whose high-school French won't get them through this, a rough (very rough) translation through my own high-school French, aided by Google but not a whole lot. Improvements gladly accepted in the comments section:

(TITLE) The game of immigration wild-goose chase – Will you be able to install yourself in Switzerland? (playing piece to cut out)

Request a visa

Visa refused

Become a millionaire footballer

Ruptured ligament – Move back two spaces

Marry a Swiss citizen – (a little help with the quote, svp?)

Marry a resident of the European Union – ".. a bankrupt Irishwoman?"

Embark in a boat – "How do I get from the Mediterranean to Lake Leman?"

Begin a clandestine life.

Learn the Swiss customs

Choose the right religion – "Allah … lujah!"

Disguise yourself as a typical Swiss person

… but no ostentatious zeal

Request asylum

Welcome to "(no entry while under consideration(?))" – Lose a turn

Right of appeal: You may take up a degrading occupation after a few months – "Politician?"

Final decision: Negative

  1. Mike – I, too, love the format of this strip. It almost made me head for the dice – and the poor guy would have a better chance of getting a visa by rolling dice! Happy Saturday and Superbowl Weekend.

  2. Marry a Swiss. She smells of Appenzeller [a Swiss cheese.]

  3. I figured it was something like that, but I didn’t recognize the verb and Google wasn’t helping. Thanks!
