CSotD: 2 out of 3 ain’t bad; 3 out of 3 is remarkable

Bad reporter

With his twice-a-week multi-panel "Good Reporter," Don Asmussen performs a difficult task: Three gags on the same current events theme. Considering the number of political cartoonists who have trouble coming up with one belly-buster at a time, going for three is quite a dare, and there are, understandably, a number of times when the third shot goes wide.

Which means that Asmussen often delivers only two gags that are funnier than the one that anybody else has come up with. I could live with that average, especially when you have days like today when all three are winners.

(Note: I'm finding that Saturday seems to be a tough day to find a cartoon that isn't the last piece of a complicated arc or a bland throwaway. So, starting tomorrow, I'm moving the Profile to that day, beginning with a piece on Wiley Miller I did in 2003.)
