Has Olivia Jaimes Quit Nancy? – Update

Nancy by Olivia Jaimes

Last week for the first time I am aware of since Olivia Jaimes took over the Nancy comic strip in 2018 it went into rerun status, using Jaimes strips from various past years beginning on Tuesday September 2.

Okay, she gets a break like all the other cartoonists. And setting up alternative cartoonists like they did last year was probably a complicated task they didn’t care to repeat.

But this week, so far, Andrews McMeel Syndication/GoComics are going with Ernie Bushmiller reruns.

With seven years of Olivia’s Nancy to pick from why go back 70 years to Nancy strips from 1955.

Has Olivia Jaimes given up the Nancy assignment? Is Nancy in rerun status until a new cartoonist can be found. Will Nancy go into permanent rerun status à la Peanuts, Get Fuzzy, For Better or For Worse, and others?

If Olivia has left Nancy how long before we can reveal her secret identity?

So many questions that may be meritless if Jaimes returns in a week or three.

As noted in the comments to this item (below) the Nancy editor at AMS has responded to inquiries at the Nancy strip with a bit of an enigmatic reply that doesn’t explicitly state it will be Olivia Jaimes returning:

We will be running classic Bushmiller strips in newspapers for the next few weeks.

Never fear — modern Nancy will return in full color after a brief hiatus!

  1. If this is the end of first run Nancy, let’s hope Alley Oop by Lemon and Sayers since 2019 doesn’t follow.

Heck, when will Jim S. retire Gasoline Alley after over 105 years?

  2. I don’t think there is much chance Nancy has ended. I believe Olivia Jaimes is just using up her rerun weeks Andrews McMeel slotted all at once and convinced them to rerun the Ernie Bushmiller strips she very obviously likes much.

    1. Have you emailed Andrews-McMeel about this situation?

  3. After reading the replies by rrice (Nancy editor) to Sir-Marcie’s comments on the Sept. 8, 2025 strip, I think we can all breathe a sigh of relief.

This is intentional. We will be running classic Bushmiller strips in newspapers for the next few weeks, and GoComics content always matches print content for comics that have print clients.

    Do you work for GoComics?

Yes, I’m the editor of Nancy at Andrews McMeel Syndication. Never fear — modern Nancy will return in full color after a brief hiatus!”

    1. But when the “modern Nancy” returns will it be under the stylings of Olivia Jaimes?

  4. Andrews McMeel has handled this in an absolutely unprofessional manner. First, they should have just had an editor’s note saying the strip is on a brief hiatus and they’ll be running Bushmiller strips in place of original content.

Failing that, when the Nancy editor replied to my comment they should have identified themselves as such. Why should anyone trust what the nondescript id “rrice” says?

Anyway, I hope Jaimes is okay.

  5. I agree that this was handled poorly, and I can’t imagine why they didn’t just print a brief announcement at the beginning of this run of Bushmiller strips. Unfortunately, it’s rather par for the course for GC in terms of lack of regard and respect for their readers and subscribers, so I’m not all that surprised.

Possibly I’m just being naive, but I’m still hopeful that “modern Nancy” is not as enigmatic as it sounds and is really about OJ returning. That would be a truly icky misdirection if it’s not referring to that.

  6. OK just speculating here, but I have thought for a long time that Olivia Jaimes is Olivia Walch. If you dig around a bit you will see why. Walch was a cartoonist, but is also a scientist who just came out with a new book and just so happens to be doing a book tour right now.

      1. Interesting. Thanks for the info.

    1. Huh, if this is the case, her company is headquartered a couple of miles from me.

    2. Ooh interesting I went to have a look at her work (her comics are great and her science work seems very interesting, she has talks and interviews online!). If she is indeed Olivia Jaimes on top of that, she’s really cool! There’s definitely a few clues here and there that could make this hypothesis plausible ^_^

  7. I don’t think during a Nancy hiatus that Nancy strips by Mark Lasky, Jerry Scott, and/or the Gilchrists would be rerun.

  8. Do you know why comments aren’t appearing when I go to gocomics on my computer, but do when I’m on my phone? Eh, probably better that way, if I stick to my computer.

  9. The Detroit Free Press actually changed the byline above the cartoon to “by Ernie Bushmiller”. They are pretty good on credits for the dailys, but to sum up the Sundays, they run Crabgrass by Tauhib Bondia. I’m really curious to see what Sunday brings for Nancy because 1955 Sunday cartoons may not rerun spectacularly in 2025 due to size changes and arrangements into third page, fourth page, that kind of thing.

  10. I really don’t think Olivia Jaimes’ Nancy it’s funny at all. it lacks the visual simplicity of Bushmiller. it’s just way too wordy and way too meta
I liked last year when they had guests artists do Nancy a lot of interesting interpretations and they were funnier and visually more interesting than Jaimes’ version.

  11. Also, around 1983-1984 after Ernie Bushmiller’s passing and when Mark Lasky and later Jerry Scott took over daily Nancy, did Al Plastino work on Nancy Sunday strips? Doubtful they would never be rerun (Just like Plastino did some never run Peanuts strips when Charles Schulz had a heart attack).

When Jerry Scott took over Nancy 7 days a week daily and Sunday, he turned the strip in a Peanuts style strip with only Nancy and Sluggo as the stars and Aunt Fritzi Ritz as a unseen adult voice.
