De Adder Shows Self-Control

Editorial cartoonist Michael de Adder displays discretion in fighting off his first instincts.

Michael de Adder shows two versions of his RFK/RFK jr cartoon for The Globe and Mail. One version has him dusting off a previously used idea altered for this commentary, “But the Globe and Mail really liked the bag.”

Sounds like he offered both versions to the editor and they chose one over the other with Michael accepting their decision since his heart wasn’t really in the unpublished cartoon.

  1. Yikes. Yes, the bag was the better choice. Glad they sacked the other version.

  2. As i have said before, freedom of the press is reserved for those who OWN ONE.

  3. When you’re lucky enough to have a good editor, you can spend less time self-censoring and trust your editor’s judgement. It’s a nice relationship to have.

  4. Once upon a time, not that very long ago, the Washington Post had both Ann Telnaes and Michael de Adder as their editorial page cartoonists. Talk about a dynamic duo. And now look at the Post.

    1. Also once upon a time, some big city newspapers had two cartoonists: one left and one right.
