Comics Pay Tribute on Charles Schulz Centennial

More than 80 comic strips and comic panels will use their November 26, 2022 releases to honor the 100th birthday of cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts.

From the AP story (via The Gazette):

NEW YORK (AP) — Cartoonists across the nation are celebrating the 100th birthday of “Peanuts” creator Charles M. Schulz as only they can — with cartoons.

More than 75 syndicated cartoonists have tucked tributes, Easter eggs and references to “Peanuts” in Saturday’s funny papers to honor the creator of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and company.

“It’s a tribute to probably the world’s greatest cartoonist,” said cartoonist Patrick McDonnell, who creates the daily strip “Mutts” for 700 newspapers. “After ‘Peanuts,’ the cartoon world changed. I think most working cartoonists today would say he was the inspiration for them to become cartoonists.”

The list of participating strips ranges from “B.C,” “Dennis the Menace” and “Rhymes With Orange” to “Zippy the Pinhead” and “Zits.” Each artist was encouraged to come up with their own way to honor Schulz, who was known as “Sparky.”

The AP story has notes from John (Daddy Daze) Kovaleski, John (The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee) Hambrock, and architects of the idea Robb (JumpStart) Armstrong and Patrick (Mutts) McDonnell.

In association with The Schulz Museum.

And as a prelude on Thanksgiving Day The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, the hometown newspaper of The Schulz Museum, will include a special section:

Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the entire “Peanuts” gang [will] make a special appearance in a 24-page section celebrating the life and legacy of their creator – Charles “Sparky” Schulz.

Our staff worked for weeks to capture intimate details about the Sparky Schulz that so many here in Sonoma County knew and still remember. Our section will pay tribute to the man whose keen observations about faith, unrequited love, sports, friendship, loss and so much more graced funny pages in 2,000 newspapers – and still do today in papers like The Press Democrat.

  1. Well if I hadn’t neglected to link to the AP story you’d have read:
“For his tribute, McDonnell repaid a kindness Schulz gave him. In a “Peanuts” strip from 1999, Schulz drew his cartoon boys and girls visiting a museum and Rerun off on the side looking up with respect at a painting of the dog Earl from “Mutts.
“A framed copy of that strip hangs proudly over McDonnell’s drawing table: “I look at it every day and think of what a wonderful gesture that was and what a wonderful man and what a wonderful comic strip.”
Oh, and now there is a link to the AP story.

  2. Thanks for posting this info. Looks like I’ll be buying a newspaper tomorrow! I haven’t looked forward to reading the funnies in a long time.
