A reminder that the deadline for entries to the National Cartoonists Society’s Divisional Reuben Awards ends in three days – February 2, 2022. The NCS has put up a video describing the selection/election process of the Reuben Awards.

(As much as I love the procedural explanation I love the various interpretations of the NCS logo.)

Pastis is at times acerbic, with his constant observations about the unending failings of human nature, and at others sweet, such as when Rat finds himself under a raincloud and his friend Pig comes and shares the rain with him, asking “What are friends for?”

Greek Reporter has a good story about Stephan Pastis, creator of the Pearls Before Swine comic strip (though I think they lowball the circulation of the strip by a couple hundred with the claim of 650).

 

As of this writing Maus by Art Spiegelman is #2 and #3 overall at Amazon.

The Baby Blues transfer is only a couple of days away.

A short and not-so-sweet notice from The (Defiance, Ohio) Crescent-News:

Due to a change in King Features syndication, the comic strip “Baby Blues” will no longer appear on The Crescent-News comics page effective Monday.

Mo Willems is bringing The Storytime All-Stars to HBO Max and Cartoon Network. The acclaimed children’s author is producing a number of programs for those platforms. The first one is subtitled Don’t Let the Pigeon Do Storytime! Along with that entry is Mo Willems Story Time Shorts. Some delightful animation that will be gorgeous enough to entice younger audiences (while mild enough for parents to endure repeated viewings.)

“People started posting pics of Black teens just having fun — to help change the algorithm,” Knight says. “I was inspired by that.” Now, the Triangle-based artist is taking a whimsical approach to the serious issue of how public booking photos can affect people, especially within communities of color.

Unfortunately “black mugshots” and “black mug shots” need more work
