Ann Telnaes Wins International EWK Award

This year’s EWK award goes to a seasoned veteran among political cartoonists. Swedish-born Ann Telnaes, who signs for The Washington Post, has for many years worked in the epicenter of American politics.

The EWK selection jury noted (via Google Translate):

In times when media houses all over the world are reducing their paper editions in favor of digital publications, the space for photojournalism is shrinking. There, the Swedish-born satirist Ann Telnaes’ constant presence in The Washington Post stands out as a shining star of hope.

In her pictures, Ann Telnaes interprets the tours of the American political game with the same rigor and presence as when she raises her voice for women’s and girls’ rights in the world. Ann Telnaes is one of modern day’s foremost actors in political satire.

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists also hailed the honor to Ann:

The Washington Post’s Ann Telnaes is this year’s winner of the EWK Prize. Named after political cartoonist Ewert Karlsson, and presented each year by the EWK Society in Sweden, the award celebrates satirists and cartoonists around the globe.

In a statement Telnaes said, “I am very honored to receive this distinguished prize and also grateful that the art of satire and visual commentary is recognized and valued. Editorial cartoonists and their work are an early barometer for the free speech health of societies and an essential part of democracies. The troubling increase of autocratic regimes and an intolerance towards freedom of expression shows that the work of my colleagues from around the world is more necessary than ever.”

  1. I totally agree with Brett. Ann Telnaes is indeed “awesome”, I check every day for her latest, and have a large collection of her work. Not only is she a terrific artist, highly skilled, she is also often very funny, or powerfully biting. And it helps that her progressive politics coincide with mine. HOORAY ANN! Long may you cartoon!
