Comic Strips – Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

GoComics has been running the Mt. Pleasant comic strip for at least a month.
Recently they ran an introductory post on their blog by interviewing the creators.

How did the two of you meet and hatch the idea for Mt. Pleasant?

Kent [Sligh]: In May 2019 I received an email from Jeff Parker—the genius cartoonist who draws Dustin—explaining that his friend Rick McKee had just been laid off from The Augusta Chronicle and was interested in collaborating with a writer/cartoonist on a new cartoon strip. Jeff said he thought we would be a good fit.

Rick and I talked on the phone and started brainstorming almost immediately. I had been toying with a comic strip about kids being raised by their grandparents. Rick had an idea about a little girl living on a farm who could talk to animals. We sort of merged our two ideas together and threw in a ferret. Everything is better with a ferret.

While the GoComics archive doesn’t start with the first strip from January 3, 2021
cartoonist Rick McKee says, “We’re in the process of getting the entire archive up.”

As the debut date nears Creators is adding to the Shrimp and Grits page.

For 7-year-old Shrimp Dubose, the chaos of ubiquitous internet culture seems like it’s always intruding on her pursuit of spiritual enlightenment through fishing. The most common agent of that annoyance is her reluctantly adopted pet, a Facebook-addicted alligator named Grits.

“Shrimp and Grits” is a little home cooking for high speed times. It’s an invitation to laugh, relax and a reminder that much like life in Pensaloco, Florida, we’re all a little weird and wonderful. We just have to put down the phone long enough to look around and appreciate it.

And a creator’s page about Andy Marlette:

Born and raised by underpaid public school teachers in Sanford, Fla., Andy Marlette graduated from the University of Florida and became staff editorial cartoonist at the Pensacola News Journal in 2007.

I’m sure that is an actual score to some song in today’s Dark Side of the Horse. Anyone know?

  1. The March dates above the strips conflict with the dates inside the strips. Magnifying that March 14 strip will show a June date (6-13) in the lower left corner of the third panel of that four panel strip.
I can only guess that those March dates come from Creators when they start setting up the placeholder page for S&G.
