As a kid, cartoonist Alison Bechdel was obsessed with the bodybuilding ads at the back of her comic books. Her lifelong pursuit of fitness — along with inner transformation — is the theme of her new graphic memoir, The Secret to Superhuman Strength, which explores the connection between exercise and creativity. It’s been described by the Guardian as “quietly astonishing.”

Leading up to the May 4th release of The Secret to Superhuman Strength Alison Bechdel is recieving some good press from The Orange County Register, LGBTQ Nation, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the lead-off spot on Time’s best new books in May list.

Joe Shlabotnik. What a name.

Credit for Joe Shlabotnik goes to famed “Peanuts” comic strip creator Charles M. Schultz, who conceived of him to become Charlie Brown’s favorite baseball player.

Shlabotnik, of course, was not very good. He was thus the perfect lovable loser for that more famous lovable loser, Charlie Brown.

Daily Globe Sports Editor Doug Wolter looks at some real-life Joe Shlabotniks of MLB.
