King Features Editorial Director TEA is Interviewed

Tea Fougner is the Editorial Director for Comics at King Features Syndicate and joins [Graphic Policy] to talk about comics strips past and present.

As Tea says, “Comics is a format, not a genre.”

Tea has been with King Features for over 11 years
and was promoted to Editorial Director of Comics about a year and a half ago.

In a wonderful hour long audio interview Tea sits down with Elana Brooklyn and talks comic strips.

Tea enthuses about the script and art of 1970s Apartment 3-G and present-day Macanudo. About rising through the ranks to Editorial Director. Tea talks knowledgeably about King Features’ history, and expansively (and lovingly) on E. C. Segar’s Popeye (Tea was the force behind last year’s Popeye’s Cartoon Club). Tea tells us that The Lockhorns is the panel most likely to be the comic getting the meme treatment; but does not talk about a couple comics in the pipeline that King Features may release later this year.

It is an entertaining and informative interview.

I don’t know why, but I was surprised and impressed by young Tea’s fondness for, and familiarity with, comic strip history. Not surprised by her complete grasp of cartooning and syndicating fundamentals.
