Mark Dery on Nursery Crimes: Edward Gorey’s Morbid Nonsense.

In [an] illustrated lecture, cultural critic Mark Dery, author of Born to Be Posthumous: The Eccentric Life and Mysterious Genius of Edward Gorey, reveals the surprisingly serious themes woven through his oeuvre: death, sexuality, the human condition, the meaning (or meaninglessness?) of life, the ghastliness of fruitcakes. As well, he explores the obscure influences—and Freudian shadows—haunting Gorey’s whimsically sinister body of work.

NY Comics & Picture-story Symposium will be held on Tuesday,  December 3, 2019 at 7pm at Parsons School of Design

It’s (Not) Complicated

“The Art of Rube Goldberg” at the Queens Museum is the first comprehensive retrospective of his work since 1970, and pulls together close to 100 never-exhibited pieces. His brilliant invention cartoons depicting machines that require exhaustive multiple steps and processes to complete basic tasks are a beloved part of New York and American culture — but the exhibit highlights much of Goldberg’s other work that won him praise in his time.

‘The Art of Rube Goldberg’
When: Through Feb. 9, 2020
