Marvel Comics #1 Set to Go for $1Million – update

Marvel Comics #1 is setting up to go for over $1,000,000 at auction.

Heritage Auctions has a high-grade copy of the first Marvel (then Timely) comic book,
Marvel Comics #1, from 1939, closing in on an auction price of $1,000,000.

As Heritage Auctions says:

In the earliest Overstreet Comic Book Price Guides, only Action #1 and Detective Comics #27 were considered more valuable, and understandably so. This is the first Timely/Marvel/Atlas comic book and had the first appearances of the Human Torch, Ka-Zar, and Angel, as well as the origin and first newsstand appearance of Sub-Mariner. The cover art is by the noted science fiction/pulp artist Frank R. Paul, and the interior art featured the work of such classic Golden Age illustrators as Bill Everett, Carl Burgos, and Paul Gustavson.

At this writing the last bid is for $812,500.
The buyer’s premium ups the total to $975,000.

This would be the first Marvel comic to go for over $1Million at an auction.
A high-grade issue of Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), the first appearance of Spider-Man, sold for more than a million dollars in a private transaction. (Being in not as high-grade condition, but signed by Stan Lee, I will let my copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 go for half a million, call me.)

The auction for Marvel Comics #1 ends at 9:50am PST November 21, 2019.

Update November 21, 2019:

Marvel Comics #1 sold for over $1 Million.

In other auction news, a couple went for over half a million:

R. Crumb’s “Stoned Agin”

Neal Adams Batman cover (1973)
