Morning News Hails, Says Farewell to Mark Streeter

Mark Streeter, a Savannah Georgia cartoonist for 45 year with over 25 of those on staff with The Morning News, is bid a fond farewell by the newspaper.

Today marks the end of an era at the Savannah Morning News as Mark Streeter’s editorial cartoon is his last as a staffer.

Streeter has been a part of this publication’s family since 1974 and his opinions, expressed through his art, have graced our pages since 1985. His voice has been ingrained in this city’s identity.

The move is part of a company-wide evaluation of resources. This process involved several months of interviews and research on how to best use those resources on the topics and stories vital to area citizens. The Savannah Morning News is owned by GateHouse Media, which operates 156 daily newspapers in 39 states.

Streeter will be dearly missed by readers but also by those of us who have worked alongside him. He is a consummate professional, and his take on the news of the day is one each of his peers looked forward to seeing.

We wish him the best and hope this is not the last time we see his work.

Some background on the Gatehouse Media layoffs from Matt Davies:

The commotion over the Times’ decision has overshadowed a similar recent blow to the craft. GateHouse Media cut loose political cartoonists from its chain of 156 daily newspapers in what appears to be a reflexive response to another controversial cartoon — which contained an insulting visual gag at the expense of transgender people. Terminated were staff cartoonists Nate Beeler at The Columbus Dispatch, Rick McKee of The Augusta Chronicle, and Mark Streeter of the Savannah Morning News. The chain’s freelance cartoonists were simultaneously dismissed as well, including Long Island Business News’ Matt Bodkin, who contributes a weekly cartoon Newsday publishes on Saturday.

  1. D.D., Mark Streeter here with a minor correction. I had been on staff at the Savannah Morning News (and now defunct Savannah Evening Press) for 45 years in various capacities since 1974 as of this past June. I created editorial cartoons for the paper(s) for 35 of those years with the staff position (the first time in Savannah!) of Editorial Cartoonist created for me in 1992. Otherwise, thanks for noticing and posting a couple of my cartoons!
