Werner Wejp-Olsen – RIP

Cartoonist Werner Wejp-Olsen has passed away.

The Wejp-Olsen family has informed the world:

It is with our deepest sorrow that we share this news with you; our beloved father, husband, and brother Werner Wejp-Olsen has passed away on November 15, 2018.

We miss him sorely but try to find solace in the beautiful memories of the loving and caring man he was, and in remembering the laughter we so often shared.

He was drawing till the end, and it is his wish to continue sharing his many cartoons with the world. Momsemor, Inspector Danger, Felix, Peter & Perle, Fridolin, Amelita… all became part of our extended family.

WERNER WEJP-OLSEN (WOW)
January 7, 1938 – November 15, 2018

Seen worldwide these days with his Inspector Danger’s Crime Quiz strip,
Werner began his cartooning career in the 1950s in his native Denmark.
He was a freelance magazine cartoonist, animator, and comic book writer and artist.

He broke into the United States syndicated comic strip market with Granny and Slowpoke.

Other strips followed: The Maestro and Amalita and Professor Yuk-Yuk’s Cartooning Class.

In the late 1980s he returned to his homeland for inspiration and came up with The Tales of Hans Christian Anderson. He adapted at least 17 of the classic tales into comic strip format.

The Sunday Comics Debt site presents The Emperor’s New Clothes adaptation as it appeared in comic strip form.
Here is WOW’s version of The Ugly Duckling in pdf and transformed into the European “album” format.

Edited to add:

Richard Marschall, comics historian and editor, shares memories of his friend Werner and some behind-the-scenes tales of a Dane getting syndicated in the United States. A very nice tribute.
